Fertilization is the union or fusion of the egg (Oocyte) with the sperm.

The egg is fertilized when one of the sperms manages to tunnel its way through the egg’s protective outer layer or covering. This takes place in the fallopian tube. The fertilised egg develops into an embryo. This embryo imbeds itself in the endometrium (inner lining of the uterus). This is called implantation. The pregnancy hormone HCG (Human Chorionic Gonadotropin) is now secreted by the cells around the embryo. This hormone helps keep up the production of oestrogen and progesterone from the ovary which helps maintain pregnancy.
